Ah, summer! I have a love/hate relationship with this season:
- I love sleeping in (Malory has been getting up at 7)
- I love warmer weather (was over 90 degrees for 12 days in JUNE)
- I love the unscheduled leisurely days (multiple times I had to be two places at once with all three kids by 9:00 AM)
- I love utilizing the grill for meals (I haven’t cooked for weeks…we are NEVER HOME PEOPLE!!!)
- I love having my kids at home for fun activities (F&%$ You Hobby Lobby)
- I love the swimming pool and bikinis (My current domain in the baby pool is filled with urine, and when my belly hangs over my bikini it’s not as cute as Malory’s)
- I love the pots full of flowers and our huge green lawn (Every time I have to water the damn flowers, I end up washing off my spray tan, and if John mows the lawn one more time this week, I’m going to spray RoundUp on it).
Well………….I began writing this post around the end of June and was once again so proud of myself that I’d kept up to date on the blogging and was right on track to fulfill my promise of one post a month.
Today is Halloween.
It’s 45 degrees out, the leaves are falling, and I am sitting at Barnes and Noble trying to remember what in the hell we did all summer. I’ve had a Grande Espresso to fuel my creativity, and the caffeine has me feeling a little jittery and anxious. Or, maybe it’s the stash of Halloween candy that I stuffed into my purse. The floor around me is littered with Tootsie Roll wrappers and bits of chocolate, and I’m getting the stink eye from some old lady at the next table.
Ok, I suppose it’s only logical to begin with June. Embarrassing that I have to look at my calendar to remember what we did, but I did just turn 40 a few weeks ago, and it’s clearly all downhill from here.
When June began, I had visions of the most leisurely, fun-filled summer imaginable. The kids and I were going to do all of our favorite things…golf, swim, go to the zoo, head to Vail, etc. A few of those things happened, but by and large our summer was no less busy than the school year.
First up…haircuts. Boring I know, but I want to have documentation of this hairdo for the young man. He’s been begging for a mowhawk and colored gel for some time now, and this seemed like a good way to ensure he’ll never ask again.
Jackson also embarked upon what we hope is his future career….golf. We signed him up for lessons, made a trip to the sporting goods store for a few things to make him look professional, and kept our fingers crossed that he would like it. Mostly John kept his fingers crossed, as he has a plan for the future. He knows that if he gets at least one of his kids to like and excel at golf, the odds of him being able to add a round or two to his already thrice-weekly schedule are pretty good. Or, at least he won’t come home to find his clothes and belongings on the front lawn.
Truth be told, my boys had a great time on the course. Jackson came home and told me that he “scored” a 10 on one hole, which I’m guessing is equal to the number of beers John drank on the front 9.
In other “outdoor” related news, Jackson (and John) attempted to ride the bike that we bought at the end of the last post. We had a few tears and he “took the ditch” a few times, but I am happy to report that he successfully learned how to navigate the streets of the neighborhood. And, John likely lost a few pounds running alongside (not that he needed to:-)
Now for the little lady. She has spent each Wednesday afternoon during the last year studying, practicing, working, rehearsing. All of this in preparation for her 3.5 minutes of fame on stage in her very first dance recital.
Holy stage makeup!!! The instructions were to put it on “heavy and bright.” I clearly follow directions well.
Miss Malory doesn’t have much new to report. She is growing like a weed, and is still a joy to be around (just wait…October is coming). We managed to take her to the park a few times, and she enjoyed laughing at her siblings and her first go-around on the swings. She’s beginning to look more and more like Jackson everyday, as evidenced by their huge heads. Let’s hope they have big brains in there….
