September 2014- Back to the Grind | The Harris Family Blog

So, when I write a blog post recapping the month’s events, I usually start by looking back at my pictures and “remembering” what we did. Well, if the lack of pictures in my September folder is any indication, we had a pretty low key month. Unless you count this….

Malory’s favorite game is to have Buddy pull her all around the house on the wood floors. It’s worth hours of enjoyment….for her anyway. Jackson is a very good sport. Never mind that she’s naked.

Walter just does his best to stay out of the way.

Speaking of Walter, he was devastated when the kids went back to school, as he lost his playmates and cuddle buddies. Milo is mostly just annoyed with his “puppiness” and Malory spends her days biting him in retaliation. So, each weekday at 3:30, this is where you’ll find Walter….waiting for the big yellow box on wheels to bring his people home.

Let’s see what else did we do? Jackson went to drawing class. He’s so artistic…must get it from John. Laughing.

Jackson and I trained for an entire week to participate in the school Duathelon. Each night, we would run and bike around our neighborhood in preparation for Friday’s big event. It was unseasonably cool that week, and it rained A LOT. We could not be deterred. It was like we were professional athletes. Friday arrived, and I sensed a bit of hesitation and nervousness in my little guy. He loathes running as much as his mother. But, give the man a free T-shirt, and he’s in. We ran, we biked, we ran again…..and then we came home for pizza and wine. A great time.

The following weekend, Jackson and I did some freezer cooking in preparation for the long, cold winter. I’d read an article on the Internet (everything is true on there) that this winter was going to be E-P-I-C, like nothing my generation has ever seen….feet of snow over and over beginning in September and continuing until mid-May of next year. I love snow and was EXCITED over this forecast. I even contemplated heading to the new Costco to stockpile water and toilet paper.

As of this writing, which is quite some time after the end of September, we’ve had no snow. But, you’ll be happy to know we ate all of the food….and we have plenty of toilet paper! Screw you, weather forecasters…..you shouldn’t toy with my emotions like that.

Moving on…..

Although I didn’t mention it earlier, the end of September is actually a VERY important time. Both of our sweet princesses celebrate their birthdays, one day apart. I am trying to remind myself to enjoy this time when Malory doesn’t know it’s her birthday, because there will come a time in a couple of years where I have to host TWO birthday parties, one right after the other. Remember the joint parties I used to have for Jackson and Reese, whose birthdays are a month apart? Yeah, that was back when I was the boss. But, I digress….

I’ll start with Malory, because like I said, she didn’t even know she was turning TWO and was just delighted to receive a t-shirt with her best friends on it…Charlie and Lola. Plus, daddy brought home an ice cream cake and she was delighted.

Now, on to our resident 6-year-old. We completely switched gears this year from the usual pink Princess party and decided on a Minute to Win It party. We’d been watching the show all summer on the game show network and were pretty sure we’d win a million dollars no problem.

A quick Pinterest search and I had the party planned. That and a quick call to my talented friend Stacey for some cookies.

If I’m being completely honest, the party wasn’t the greatest success. We played some games, but mostly the kids just wanted to run around outside like hooligans. After a while, I gave up on my dream to win big on the TV show and just let them be kids. Instead, I hung out with some of my favorite moms and had a few cocktails. It’s rumored that I make a pretty good vodka soda. Weird that everyone wants to come to my birthday parties….:-)

I’ll just leave you this month with a final image of what happens after one of our parties. Everything must be cleansed…the kitchen, the children and oftentimes my liver.
