So, this pretty much sums up how I felt about all things domestic at the beginning of March.
The previous 6-months were a season where I was showing our house multiple times a week, and therefore was cleaning and cleaning, and then cleaning some more. My poor people were not allowed to eat or drink in peace, for fear of making crumbs and sending Mom “over the edge.” But, I am happy to report that we are officially under contract (again:-). We are set to close in mid-May, and I don’t intend on scrubbing, picking up, or dusting a single thing between now and then. Seriously.
With all of the extra time I saved on cleaning, Reese and I were able to work on her makeup application skills. How do you think we did?
Jackson and I spent the free time working on fractions. He loves to cook with me, and one of our favorite things to make is cookies. He’s getting great at reading the recipes and mostly I let him do the work, with a little guidance here and there. Well, one day we decided to try a new recipe for Breakfast Cookies, which were supposed to be moderately healthy and appropriate for the “most important meal of the day.” When I asked him how much butter we were going to need, he replied “One and a half cups”. I thought “Hmmmm…..that doesn’t sound much like a health food recipe, but the more butter the better, right?” Here is our finished product…
EPIC FAIL. I wracked my brain to decipher what could have possibly gone wrong, checking the expiration date on both the baking soda and powder, as well as the oven temperature. Then, I decided to take another look at the recipe, and discovered we were supposed to use ONE-HALF cup of butter. One stick, not three.
We’ll keep working on the fractions.
March is also the month of Spring Break. We (translation: me) decided to lay low around Fort Collins, rather than brave the masses and go somewhere tropical and exotic, like Vail. I had the best of intentions in planning an activity for each day similar to last year, but quickly discovered that Habanero is not quite as cooperative this year. She is NOT content to sit in the stroller and watch us bowl, paint pottery, or ride Go-Karts. I don’t blame her really.
The first day of Spring Break we played a new game called “All Day Pajama Party”. I thought it was awesome, especially the part where we watched a movie with our eyes closed. But, the kids were not as enthusiastic. So, we braved the elements and went out to the backyard playground for some fun.
Another day, we met Aunt Liz and the girls at the zoo. I’m not sure the kids actually saw any animals, because Liz and I were too busy visiting to point them out. Especially once we discovered that the zoo now serves BEER!!! Both families left with a season pass that day:-)
One last thing…every year, I allow each of the kids to pick a day where they can play hooky from school and spend the day with me, doing whatever they want. Reese picked a day last fall, which happened to coincide with a visit from Nana. Jackson had been carefully planning his day for quite some time, and we had a great one.
We started the day with a breakfast of champions and a movie.
Yes, at 10:30 in the morning. I had terrible indigestion.
Then, we went shopping for some new clothes and a trip to Sephora for some mascara (hey….I have to take advantage of only one kid in the car, and it was right next door to Crazy 8). I promise he didn’t mind, and even loved applying some beautiful purple eye shadow to my lids. The picture doesn’t do justice to how bright it actually was.
